Escudo de Veraguas, Panama’s Forgotten Island

October 12, 2011

There were at least 10 turtles in the lagoon.  I decided to sit down over the rocks in the middle and wait there.  After a short while several turtles started to come out of the water wondering what I was…
Escudo de Veraguas Island in the Panamanian Caribbean side is one of the less visited places in the country.  After all there is nothing there.  Well, there are no hotels, roads nor or even a dock.  It is one of the most pristine places I have ever seen.
Some animals here have virtually no natural predators, so they are not afraid.  We even found a beautiful small bird eating a lizard, and as we got closer to take a picture, the bird just stood there. I even pulled the lizard by the tail and the bird fought back pulling the lizard by the head!
The island is surrounded by huge stones that used to be part of it, but they got separated from the main island by erosion.  Vegetation still is growing over these stones creating a scene difficult to explain.  There is even a hidden place with a small beach like carved by hand, with a natural roof; The Gnabe Bugle, the ethnic group that sometimes visits the island call this place The Virgin’s Cave.
Coral reefs are all around the island.  We could see the ocean floor from the boat since the water is so clear…
Panama has a lot to offer, many places to be visited, but this island was the ultimate experience for us.  No one lives in this amazing place, so we were there with nature.
There are a few Panama tours that can take you to this paradise.  Tour companies in Panama will offer you other things before they offer you Escudo de Veraguas, but a visit to this magical island is totally worth it, and it should be part of your next overseas adventure travel.
