How to Create a Healthy Cooking Blog

January 5, 2012

Healthy eating blogs are a great way to explore your love of food and wellness. Whether you start a healthy cooking blog as a hobby or expand it to become a lucrative business, a blog can help you live a more physically fit life and influence the well-being of others. Most food blogs start out as hobbies, a way to share your favorite healthy recipes with family and friends. If you have enough readers, however, you may want to consider making money off your blog.

The most common way to do this is through advertising. Advertisers will pay to you post their ads on your blog. The more readers you get each day, the more money you will make. Before any of this can take place, however, you have to create a blog. The most successful healthy eating blogs have a strong personal voice. You may want to include an “about me” page that mentions why you were inspired to create a healthy cooking blog. Whether you wanted to lose weight or just ensure that you were getting the right nutrients, don’t be afraid to share your story with your readers. Of course, the most important feature of food blogs are the recipes. You will want to post recipes on a regular basis, along with easy-to-follow tips and directions. If possible, include the number of fat grams and calories per serving.

Do not forget to take photos of the finished product, as well as the steps you took to create the meal. Photos help add interest to your healthy cooking blog, break up the text, and draw the readers’ interest. When posting recipes and healthy eating tips, be sure to give credit where credit is due. If you were inspired by your favorite cookbook or cooking show, say so. If you recreated the recipe from another healthy cooking blog, be sure to ask their permission to republish it. Never use pictures from other blogs or websites without citing the source. You should also consider including healthy eating tips on your blog. Many people do not have a fundamental understanding of how to balance proteins and carbohydrates to make a meal. You can include tips on how to lose weight, trade out high-fat ingredients in a recipe for healthier options, or even make a meal vegetarian or vegan-friendly. You might even want to mention ways that readers can make a meal appropriate for people with diabetes, high-cholesterol, or those on low-carbohydrate diets. Many healthy eating blogs tailor their posts around holidays.

For example, during Christmas you could write about low-fat substitutes for classic Christmas treats such as fudge or gingerbread cookies. During the summer, you can post articles about creating a healthy Independence Day barbecue using nutritious foods like grilled veggie skewers and turkey burgers. Make sure to post articles on a regular basis. Leaving too much time between posts will cause your readership to drop. If you will be on vacation or unable to write on your blog, consider asking a “guest author” to submit some posts. Your readers will appreciate hearing from a fresh voice, and the constant posts will keep them entertained. You should also be sure to engage with readers by reading their posts and responding to them. Every blog receives some negative feedback; simply ignore the critics and focus on the people who like what you are writing about. Finally, contests and giveaways are used by many food blogs to help boost readership. You may want to give away cooking appliances, utensils, or even a cooking class to someone who comments on your blog or “likes” your blog’s social media page.
