Something that every beginner and even quite a few advanced players have problems with is tuning a guitar. To learn how to tune a guitar takes practice and it takes practicing the right methods as doing it wrong is just going to make it even harder in the end. In this article I am going to share with you the way that I learned how to tune a guitar by ear and I think is probably one of the best ways to go about doing it. It may take a little bit longer but it will ensure that you do eventually get there, and not doing it right is jsut going to get you going in the wrong direction faster, so without further talk lets begin.
- The first thing you need to do is buy a tuner. It doesn’t matter what kind, all you need is something that you can use as a reference because you need to know what an in-tune guitar sounds like. Tuners are cheap so go out and get one and get your guitar in tune.
- Next thing you need to do is practice tuning your guitar. Every time you go to play your guitar, attempt to tune it yourself for 5-10 minutes. Do not fret if you mess it up or are no where close to making it sound good, just simply use your tuner to do it for you then continue playing like you normally would.
- Repeat doing this every time you pick up a guitar, eventually your brain and ears will get used to what each note is supposed to sound like. If you really want to learn how to tune a guitar quick, just learn the 6th E string since many tuning methods can be done as long as you have a reference string to tune from.
It’s interesting how this process works but you probably will not even be aware of it, one day you will just be like “Hey that sounds like it’s in tune!” Each day you will get closer until you are getting spot on every time or at least as much as possible.
