Know How to Trade Penny Stocks

October 25, 2011

There are plenty of investors who prefer to look for cheap stocks to buy, as they can buy plenty of shares of these stocks at once. Cheap stocks, or also known as penny stocks, are those stocks which are traded at less than $5 per share. Usually, cheap stock trading occurs through over the counter (OTC) or through pink sheet markets. Trading in pink sheet markets is believed to be a lot riskier, because the companies that are listed in these are not really required to file financial reports with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Thus, if you are one of those investors who are planning to buy cheap stocks from a pink sheet market, then you are recommended to practice extra caution and be very careful about this.

If you want to invest in cheap penny stocks, there are two major options to choose from. An investor may hire a full service brokerage firm, and tell the broker how many stocks he wants to buy, how much is his budget, and the ticker symbol of the stock. Then this broker will attempt to purchase such stocks for the investor; and the broker will earn money either through commission per transaction, or through principle transactions, which means that the broker would make money on the difference between the bid price and ask price, known as the spread. The advantage of a full service brokerage is that they offer financial advice aside from just processing the investor’s trading transactions, thus this is ideal for the beginners in stock market investing, especially in penny stocks. But the disadvantage of which is that they are really expensive.

Another way to buy cheap penny stocks is through creating an account with a discount brokerage firm. They are more affordable compared to the full service brokerage, but they do not offer financial advice; thus, the stock investors must already be knowledgeable about such investment and know how to do it, and this is not really recommended for newbie investors.

Knowing how to buy penny stocks is recommended, and knowing the best penny stocks to buy and when to sell them is very essential. Trading penny stocks is very risky, thus, investors must really be careful with it.
