For those that are considering the lapband surgery and have approved this by their doctor, they should realize that they are not just going to be sitting around waiting for the day in which their surgery is going to come. They have several other things that they are going to need to do in order to prepare themselves for their life after surgery. And if they prepare before the surgery they are going to find that they are going to be able to heal better and adjust to the new lifestyle that they are going to have, instead of taking this all on at once. And those that do not prepare do not have as high success rates as those that do prepare, so this is something else to consider as well.
First off, you are going to be eating much less than what you are used to. Thus, if you can start with these new eating habits before the surgery, you will find that you are able to eat what it demanded of you and then be able to adjust to this much more easier. Most doctors recommend that the person eat around four to six small meals throughout the day, take away the snacks, and drink only non-carbonated beverages throughout the day, water is the best choice. The person will find that during these two weeks before surgery that this is going to be difficult, however, they will find that it pays off in the end for them.
The person should also start a light exercise program. Even doing something that as simple as switching to taking the stairs instead of the elevator is going to help to boost the metabolism, which could help the person lose more weight when they are through with the surgery than if they were to rely on the lap band along to help them lose weight.
Along with stopping certain medications that could cause bleeding during surgery, which is something that your doctor will go over, the person will find that if they are smokers that they should give this up as well. Smoking can interfere with the healing process and on average those that smoke, stay in the hospital much longer than those who do not smoke.
Overall, your goal to prepare yourself for the surgery is to make sure that you are adapting to the new lifestyle that you are going to have. Doing it now, will make it easier for you in the long run, which is going to make the healing time even better.
