The technology of RFID chips is something that is relatively unknown to the average person. It was originally created for retail stores as a way to track the products they have in their store. Unlike a bar code, which says a lot, an RFID chip creates a wireless signal and this allows stores to locate exact locations of items. The reason consumers haven’t really noticed is that the chips are so small that they can’t be seen with your eyes. This same technology has been added to US passports and some credit cards. Soon most of your credit cards and IDs are going to contain this chip, but what do you know how to protect yourself?
Imagine walking down the street and you’re not physically touched. Even the street is empty. Little do you know, someone has a device listening to wireless signals in the area and is able to pick up the signals produced from cards in your wallet? It’s a scary thought because there really isn’t much technology required to listen to pick up this wireless information. What you need to do is create a wireless shield in your wallet that prevents the signal from escaping. You can simply do this with an RFID wallet. This wallet looks just like any other wallet you would find on the market and costs about the same too. The only difference is that the wallet is insulated with conductive material that prevents the signal from escaping. It’s the easiest way to cheaply protect yourself.
Another option that is available to you is to simply make a consumer choice of refusing credit cards and bank cards that have this technology. Go with a competitor to save yourself a lot of hassle. I know you can’t do this for every card though because things like your passport and drivers license will probably be required in your life. You can get an RFID passport wallet for your passport or you could keep it in a safety deposit box at the bank, which is absolutely safe from wireless attacks. When it comes to your drivers license I’ve found the best way to do this is wrap it in tin foil and throw it your glove compartment of your car. By right, you only need to have your license in your car and the tinfoil will trap the signal.
