Steam Iron Buying Tips

February 1, 2012

Ironing is something that all of us do because our clothes get wrinkled and we have to make them presentable somehow. A lot of people just stick with what they know and that is the regular old iron that they watched their mother use as a kid. As humans we tend to stick with the things that have always worked for us, but steam is something that is breaking into the market. You may not be aware, but steam is much better for your clothes and provides many important benefits. The only issue people have is that they don’t know what they should be looking for when it comes to buying, so I thought I’d share a few important tips.

Tip 1: Focus on the Rated Power

A clothes steamer is completely useless if it doesn’t have the necessary power to create steam. It isn’t enough to just boil water and create the steam because you need a consistent flow of steam coming out of the iron. Without the consistent flow you’re going to find that you’re not going to have a good experience. I’ve had a few different kinds of steam irons over the year and I have to say that 1500 watts seems to be about the best power rating to get. Anything below that will result in spitting water. Anything above that and you’re throwing your money away.

Tip 2: Pay Attention to Brand

Irons are a dime a dozen and you’re going to see a lot of different brands. You might have a desire to just get whatever is on sale, but that might not work out in your favor. Brand names play a big role. The names you should be looking for are Panasonic, Rowenta, Black & Decker, etc. If you go after unknown name brands you’re pretty much buying junk. The is a golden rule for all steam products.

Tip 3:  Aim for around $40

There are literally two types of shoppers; cheap skates and “value shoppers”. If you aim for the cheapest product, you’re going to be greatly disappointed. The creation of steam is tough on the build of an iron, so you need something durable. Value shoppers buy expensive items because they believe that this guarantees a quality product. I find that this is just overkill. I’ve found you can get the best bang for your buck spending just $40.
