The Good and The Bad About Online Learning

October 11, 2011

Many different people are considering getting a college degree. The majority of new college students are right out of high school. However, there seems to be an ever increasing number of older students either starting out or going back to finish up on that degree from years ago. Many of these older students are using online courses to accomplish the course work that is required for their degree choices. Like everything else, online learning has its good and bad points.

For some using online education for the learning process is an entirely new concept. Yes, it has been around for quite a while, but it is still an unknown world to many folks, both young and old alike. Once these people take a class through the method they will quickly see that it is not very mysterious as they once thought.

I will give the bad first and then focus on some of the good points. The one area that I can see as being bad, but highly correctable, is the need for the online students to be self-starters. Many people are used to having someone around to tell him or her that they need to get started on this or that. These people will find that they need to be a self-motivator in regards to doing the course work and turning in the assignments on time. It is not very difficult to get yourself to the self-motivator position, but it does take a little practice.

One of the bigger drawing points about working towards a degree with this method is the fact that it can be accomplished on your own computer. This would, of course, eliminate the need to travel to and from a classroom that in many cases might be a considerable distance for some people. Being able to take the courses when you have the time to do so is worth its weight in gold as far as I am concerned. Be sure to check out online degrees guru for more information.
