The Upside and Downside to Seeing a Chiropractor for Back Pain Treatment

October 29, 2011

There is an upside and a downside to seeing a chiropractor for back pain treatment. Before venturing to look at the said pros and cons of chiropractic treatment for back pain treatment, we need to have some basic appreciation of the nature of the said chiropractic treatment. That is where we come to realize that chiropractic treatment is one that is mainly aimed at bringing about relief from pain. It is mostly used in the treatment of back pain, though we are told that it can actually bring about relief in many other parts of the body. It is a treatment method whose efficacy is mainly based on the appreciation of the relationship between the musco-skeletal system and the nervous system. That is where we come to learn that it has been known, for quite a long time, that problems in the musco-skeletal system tend to manifest as ‘pain’ which is perceivable through the nervous system. It is further appreciated that the pain originating from one part can cause ‘systemic’ pain (in other parts of the body). Further still, it is appreciated that the pain can in turn trigger other health problems – which can be conversely only be well addressed by sorting out the underlying musco-skeletal misalignment.

The spinal manipulation exercises carried out in the course of chiropractic treatment, then, are meant to correct such musco-skeletal misalignment. That in turn would relieve the resultant pain, which would in turn resolve systemic pain(s) it may have triggered elsewhere in the body. That, in a nutshell, is the thesis of chiropractic treatment.

Now as we noted earlier, there are pros and cons to seeing a chiropractor for back pain treatment. The pros of seeing a chiropractor for back pain treatment would include the facts that:

The chiropractor’s treatment is likely to be effective. For one, chances are that you will experience almost-immediate relief, once the chiropractor performs the relevant procedures. Secondly, chances are that the relief you experience will be profound – not the ‘partial’ and ‘fleeting’ relief brought about by painkillers.

The chiropractor’s treatment is likely to be inexpensive. Chiropractors’ fees tend to be somewhat lower than, say, orthopedists’ fees.

The chiropractor’s treatment is likely to non-invasive. Some of the issues addressed by a chiropractor through simple spinal manipulations are issues which, say, an orthopedist would only address through complex and highly invasive surgical procedures.

The downside to seeing a chiropractor for back pain treatment would include the facts that:

Some of the chiropractic procedures may be risky. That is especially the case with spinal manipulation procedures, which if not well performed, can be very risky (even fatal, in some cases).

The chiropractor’s treatment may not bring about lasting pain relief. Chances are that you will have to keep on attending chiropractic treatment sessions if you are to maintain the pain relief benefits.

The local chiropractor’s treatment, like a Charlotte chiropractor, may not be covered by the health insurer. This can potentially mean having to pay the chiropractor’s fees out of pocket – which may drain you financially.
