Are you a garage owner? And do you enjoy working on projects at home or car repairs during weekends? If so how about constructing a workshop in the garage to carry out these activities when it is rainy, or just as a hideout when it gets too hectic in the house. Just a couple of modifications and you can be on your way to a working area that is not only handy to work in but also fun.
Garage Workshop Lighting
The first consideration to make when you want to build a garage workshop is what type of lighting you will use. Nowadays, many a garage only has one tiny window on one wall that lets in very little light. Allowing in light from the sun is an excellent way to brighten the work area. Sunlight will greatly aid you to see the small numbers on tape measures and tools. On several occasions I have been forced to leave the workshop and go outside so that I could read a caliper if the lighting inside comes from those ghastly fluorescent tubes. But, if you don’t have more room on your walls to add a window, then an excellent substitute is installing a sky light or light tube. Light tubes are manufactured using a very reflective component and can be tilted in any direction to allow the light to “move” to whatever location where you need it.
Build A Sturdy Work Bench
In the garage workshop, the work bench is the second most crucial element. I have constructed mine using timbers of 4” X 12” fir. While some might consider this to be overdoing it, you will find that the added mass is really convenient when you are knocking a wheel bearing out of its hub or hammering on a wooden project. Remember to include a vise on the bench. I have affixed mine on a corner in such a way that it won’t interfere with what I’m working on and yet it remains near for when I need to grip a section I might want to work on. Many times, you will require three hands and if there is no one to help, the vise will work as your third hand.
If you intend to do a lot of wood working, you might want to think about a work table rather than a work bench. A work table gives you the option to move around all its sides, an excellent feature for people who are painting or staining. Ensure that you construct a robust work table since with wood working you will be doing hammering most of the time.
When you are working out of your garage, there are other things you will definitely include, for instance storage bins and a hoist, and that is the lovely part of building. The process of finding out the things you need to incorporate to turn it into your exclusive place is, for the most part, the really enjoyable experience.
