Why a Steam Iron is Superior to a Regular Iron

November 6, 2011

In your home right now you probably have a regular old iron. This is the case for most people, but have you really asked why? The most obvious answer is that it is the same thing your parents had, so you just do what they did. Well, your parents probably had a black and white TV for more time than they had a color, so why don’t you have a black and white one? You don’t because it is outdated and old technology. This is really the same thing when it comes to iron. The regular iron you grew up on is something that is over a hundred years old, so don’t you think it’s time to move into the future? I hope to show you why using steam for ironing is superior to that of a regular iron. I also hope to show you how to determine the best steam iron to purchase.

I think most people don’t realize what they’re doing with an old iron. Essentially you’re heating up a flat piece of metal and running it over your clothes. It is true that heat is needed to remove wrinkles, but you can use different forms of heat. Hot metal is a very specific and intense type of heat. When you rub the iron over your clothes you’re actually burning the clothes. I know it doesn’t seem that way because you don’t tend to smell anything or see anything, but you are. You don’t necessarily have to see the signs of burning to burn something. You’re actually slowly destroying your clothes and causing them break down faster. This is the big reason why you shouldn’t be using the old iron.

Steam is different. Steam has the heat you need to remove wrinkles and allow your clothes to look nice, but it isn’t as potent as a hot piece of metal. Steam immediately dissipates into the atmosphere in just a second or two. This is the big reason why dry cleaners use steam. There isn’t as much worry with delicate fabrics that have issues with heat. When it comes to picking the best steam iron you should definitely stay in the average price range. You really don’t have to fork out that much.  The big thing is looking for one that is 1200-1500 watts. This is in a good range where steam can be properly produced without having water spitted out. If I was to choose I brand, I would go with Panasonic steam irons. I find that they actually have the best bang for your buck. Typically their irons run in the $25-40 range, so it’s around the same price as a regular iron.
